Healthy Living

We know that success starts with good health and good health starts with better food. Safeway partners with a number of health related causes in an effort to help build healthier communities and families. Together, we support valuable research, provide education and awareness for early detection and prevention, and promote healthy living initiatives. About our Partners

Breast Cancer Research & Awareness

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Canadian women. Thanks to advancements in medicine and technology, the five year survival rate for breast cancer is 87%. Although survival rates have increased, there are still thousands of Canadians who lose their lives to this disease every year.
Each year, Safeway partners with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation to raise funds and awareness to support cutting-edge Canadian research.
Since 2002, Safeway has donated over $12 million for leading-edge breast cancer research and education initiatives across Western Canada. Whether by encouraging more women to visit their physicians for an annual mammogram, educating our neighbours on the importance of early detection and the benefits of living a balanced and healthy lifestyle, or bringing a voice to people of all ages affected by this disease, we are honoured to stand alongside the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Prostate Cancer Research & Awareness

Prostate Cancer Canada is the only national foundation dedicated to the elimination of prostate cancer through research, education, support and awareness. No cancer affects more Canadian men than prostate cancer. During his lifetime, one in seven men will be diagnosed with the disease and fortunately, over 90 percent of prostate cancer cases are curable if detected and treated in their earliest stages. Early detection is key.
Every June, Safeway embarks on a campaign to raise awareness and fund research for prostate cancer. Through Safeway sponsored events such as "Do it for Dad," casual days and BBQ events, Safeway and our customers donate to the cause and learn about the disease.
Funds raised by Safeway provide funding to build overall awareness for the cause, early detection and support for the Safeway Rising Star in Prostate Cancer Research Award, which acknowledges emerging leaders in prostate cancer research. This award helps research scientists in the initial five years of their first academic or research appointment to help them develop and conduct prostate cancer research. The work supported by this grant will help identify a new approach to more effectively diagnosing and treating prostate cancer.
Over the past decade, Safeway customers and employees have raised $12.6 million for the fight against prostate cancer. Just as importantly, they have raised an incredible amount of awareness about the disease.

Heart & Stroke Foundation

Through our special relationship with the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada, Safeway shares in the vision of healthy lives for Canadians through heart disease prevention, saving lives and promoting recovery.
Together with our employees, each year we contribute over $225,000 in support of the study, prevention and reduction of heart disease and stroke through cardiovascular research and the promotion of healthy lifestyles. Heart Disease and strokes claims one Canadian life every seven minutes.

Regional Children's Hospital

In partnership with provincial Children’s Hospitals and child focused health programs, Safeway is committed to supporting the specialized health needs of children by funding medical research, equipment and family health programs.
Together with our employees, each year we contribute over $500,000 through partnerships with children’s health organizations in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario.
